Violin Lessons in Chessington (and Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden & Nearby Areas)Here
If you’re looking for a violin teacher who combines a calm, supportive approach with genuine professional experience, I offer structured violin lessons for children and adults, from complete beginners through to advanced students.
I studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where I was awarded the AGSM and the Salzmann Scholarship. Alongside teaching, I’ve worked with professional orchestras including the Philharmonia, Scottish Opera and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and I have led ensembles such as the Virtuosi of London, Mornington Sinfonia and the Aeolian Sinfonia of North London.
I teach from my home in Chessington (KT9) with parking available, and I welcome enquiries from Chessington, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surbiton, New Malden, Worcester Park, and nearby areas including Cheam and Epsom.

Who these violin lessons are for?
My teaching is especially well suited to:
Beginners (children and adults)
Students who can play a little but want to progress properly (improvers)
Those working towards graded exams (or who simply want to play confidently)
Students who want a teacher who can explain technique clearly and build steady musical foundations
Parents are welcome to attend lessons, particularly for younger pupils, and I’m CRB checked.
What we work on
Every student is different, but most progress fastest with a balanced approach:
Posture, violin hold & bow hold (simple adjustments that make everything easier)
Tone production (creating a good sound early, not “later”)
Intonation (how to play in tune with confidence)
Rhythm & timing (a huge part of sounding musical)
Reading music and developing fluency on the instrument
Practice guidance – how to practise efficiently between lessons
Musicality – phrasing, articulation, dynamics and style
The aim is always the same: steady progress and an enjoyable, confident relationship with the instrument.
Beginners: what happens in the first lessons:
For complete beginners (and parents of beginners), the early lessons typically cover:
how to choose or hire an instrument and the correct size
how to hold and look after the violin
basic setup, first sounds, and a clear plan for early progress
gentle introduction to reading music and suitable beginner repertoire
If you’re returning to the violin after a long break, we’ll rebuild good habits and confidence without rushing.
Exams (optional)
Exams can be taken with ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall, and I can include the relevant musicianship and theory support where needed. Exams are never compulsory — some students prefer to focus on building skill and enjoyment without taking grades.
Teaching background and musical experience
Alongside performance work, educational and coaching commitments have included Wells Cathedral School, Epsom College, and the Guildhall School of Music. I also give recitals and concerto performances, and work with orchestras as a guest leader/soloist.

FAQ
Do I need a violin before I start?
Ideally, yes, but if you’re unsure what to buy or hire, I’ll advise you on the best next step and what to look for.
What age can children start violin lessons?
Many children start successfully at primary-school age, but it depends on the child. I’m happy to advise if you’re unsure.
How often should lessons be?
Weekly lessons usually work best, especially at the beginning. Some students move to fortnightly once they’re established.
Can adults start violin as a beginner?
Absolutely! Adult beginners are very welcome, and lessons are paced sensibly with clear goals.
Do you prepare students for graded exams?
Yes. ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall, if exams are the right fit for the student.
